AJK (Plant Hire) Ltd (the Company) was formed by Mr J.D. Percival in 1963 as a Land Drainage, Plant Hire and Agricultural Contracting Company to compliment his extensive farming interests in Cheshire.

The initial years saw the Company carrying out many Land Drainage schemes for local farmers and included an extensive acreage for the Arley Estate. General Agricultural Contracting complimented the land drainage to form a sound and well respected Company in the farming community.

The Company found itself carrying out increasing numbers of drainage schemes on sports fields for new schools, colleges, and universities and was included on a number of Local Authority select tender lists.

From the early 1970's the Company started to carry out the construction of complete sports grounds including the earthworks, drainage, cultivation and seeding; hard porous pitches, running tracks, and tennis courts were also constructed. The Company then diversified into land reclamation works - derelict land on disused airfields, railways, canals, and opencast mining sites were transformed into areas for amenity, industrial and agricultural use.

The 1980's saw the Company undertaking Inner City Environmental Improvement Schemes, involving all aspects of soft and hard landscaping; aftercare and ground maintenance also became an important part of the company's turnover. At the end of the decade a full 18 hole golf course was constructed at Mottram Hall, Wilmslow and alterations carried out to the Belfry Brabazon Course for the DeVere Hotel group.

The 1990's continued along the lines of the 1980's with major contracts won for work in Bedworth nr Coventry (£1.25million) carrying out environmental works on an old mining area.

These included earthworks forming a golf course /driving range layout, capping mine shafts, laying sewers/ balancing lake/ thrust boring under a canal together with a housing estate layout.

Some 500k cubic metres of earthworks were carried out constructing the layout for a major golf course designed by a prominent American designer near Wrexham, N.Wales. Various smaller contracts were carried out on golf courses on a national basis together with environmental/ play area schemes.

The early 2000s have seen the Company involved in a large environmental contract on a housing estate for the Salford Borough Council together with works on Millennium schemes, construction sites, sports fields, golf courses, play areas, and nature reserves.

Over the years, the Company has developed it's Plant Hire Division and has become a well known and respected Company within the industry providing specialised low ground pressure earth moving equipment which includes Bulldozers, Excavators (steel/rubber tracked), Articulated Dump Trucks and Tracked Dumpers (rear /swivel tip) which are also utilised on the Company's own contracts.

All the above aspects have enabled the Company to build up a name for good workmanship and integrity within the Industry.

Ken graduated from the University of Aston in Birmingham with a BSc. in Civil Engineering and subsequently became an Associate Member of the Institute of Civil Engineers. Also holds the National Diploma in Building Construction together with Certificate of Professional Competence in the maintenance of heavy goods vehicles and is a Plant Hire and Transport Manager. Previous experience includes Structural Design Engineer in steel and concrete working on the Ince B Power Station Project and as a Site Engineer on the M69 Leicester/Coventry Motorway. Ken is fully conversant with Quantity Surveying and estimating procedures of the earth moving and landscaping industry.
